The Community of communes is situated in the North-East of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park and it is located in close proximity to two major traffic links: Limoges-Périgueux and Limoges-Angoulême.
The Community of communes, situated between the plains of the Charente and the valleys of the Dordogne, is part of the area of the Western Limousin. It has remarkable assets and places of interest that have protected status:
- The gorges of the Gorre and the Gorret at Saint Auvent,
- the ornithological lake of La Pouge and Puy d' Eau,
- the valley of the Vienne at Sainte Marie de Vaux.
The megalithic graves of Chez Moutaud and La Côte are testimonies of life dating back to Neolithic times (5000 to 2500 years BC). The history of the Limousin is very strongly related to stones and water (miraculous fountains or those used for devotion). The sanctuary of Notre Dame de la Paix (“little Lourdes”) in Saint Auvent is a place of worship known and visited by many pilgrims. Our district is today, thanks to its dynamism, a remarkable cultural centre. Many events of national renown are organised locally which attract an increasingly large public (a contemporary art exhibition called “Rencontres d’Art Contemporain”, an exhibition of watercolours called “Le Salon de l’Aquarelle en Limousin”, musical evenings, concerts, piano recitals, theatre.
Another site not to miss is "The Garden of Liliane" a landscaped botanical park, set at the bottom of a small valley typical of the Limousin and overhung by the castle of Saint-Laurent-sur-Gorre. The park extends over 8000 m2. Since 1982, rare plants can be found side-by-side with wild flowers which reseed through the blowing of the wind and the flooding of the Gorre.
In 2000 the garden received an award for its outstanding attention to visitors’ reception by the CDT of the Limousin and it obtained the label "Remarkable Garden" in 2005.
