Saint-Auvent
The protected site of the Saint-Auvent town centre, of the Gorre and the Gorret comprises two kinds of landscapes: the zone where the two rivers meet resulting in a highpoint and steepsided valleys; the area of the lake at La Pouge and Puy d’Eau, consisting of small fields and rolling hills. The Gorre and the Gorret which leave the bottom of the very narrow valley and run parallel for two kilometres before joining, have formed a remarkable headland. In the past, this site was crossed by the Roman road leading from Limoges to Chassenon which crossed the river at the hamlet of Le Planchat. This very straight road was abandoned in medieval times and replaced by a partly paved windy road, which is still well visible. The humpback bridge which spans the Gorre dates from the same period, the 11th and 12th centuries. The Sanctuary Notre Dame de la Paix which lies at approximately 200 metres distance from the centre of Saint-Auvent is one of the most picturesque places of the river.
