Saint-Laurent-sur-Gorre
The commune of Saint-Laurent-sur-Gorre is the capital of the district and seat of the Gorre Valley Community of communes. It carries the name of one of the most venerable martyrs of the Roman church. Traces of human presence in Saint Laurent go back to Neolithic times. During the 13th century, Saint Laurent, although geographically and historically belonging to Limousin country, was integrated into the vicounty of Rochechouart which belonged to the Poitou area. During nearly six centuries thereafter, Saint Laurent belonged to the Poitou and it was the Revolution which returned it to its country of origin.
